At the height of "Swinging London" and Beatlemania, the country that invented soccer organized the 1966 World Cup. However, the tournament was far from the spirit of peace and love of the time. Violent play and arbitration scandals characterized the eighth edition of the tournament. England reached the top of their group after drawing with Uruguay and beating Mexico and France. The quarterfinals against Argentina ended in a controversial 1-0 in favor of the hosts. In the semifinals, England defeated Portugal 2-1, which at that time had the best team in its history.
The final between England and Germany was not without controversy either. After drawing one in the first half, Martin Peters put the English ahead in the min. 78.
